Lecture title:EU-SysFlex Project: Future Operation Studies

Lecture time:2020Year7month23Sunday (Thursday) 1600

Meeting format:Video network conference,Use Tencent conference software,Conference room number:255448619

Meeting content

The EU-SysFlex project (a €26.5m Horizon 2020 project with 34 partners from across Europe’s energy sector) aims to understand the long term needs and technical scarcities when delivering over 50% of Europe’s electrical energy from renewable sources in 2030. Through this understanding it will then propose a market and regulatory framework that will incentivise the much needed flexibility solutions and services that will form the basis of future operation with high renewables. Task 2.4 of EU-SysFlex is focused upon detailed studies of multiple European systems to identify the technical scarcities that will be faced in 2030.

EirGrid is the transmission system and market operator in Ireland and its contribution to Task 2.4 was detailed steady state and dynamic security studies that assessed voltage, frequency and angle. In addition to these security studies thermal overloading and resources for system restoration were assessed. This work was delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of engineers from EirGrid and required detailed financial and technical modeling of the future power system.

This lecture will provide an overview of the concept of system services and the results of EirGrid’s Task 2.4 studies. In addition to presenting the results of these studies, with a focus on the dynamic studies, the lecture will explore modeling limitations and the challenges of system studies at scale.

Moderator:Cai Deyu Associate Researcher

Introduction to the speaker

Dr Peter Wall is a senior innovation engineer in EirGrid’s innovation team. He is responsible for performing technical studies for the DS3 program (EirGrid’s program for delivering secure, cost effective operation with 75% converter penetration) and the EU-SysFlex project (a €26.5m Horizon 2020 project with 34 partners from across Europe’s energy sector). Before joining EirGrid Dr Wall was a consultant with RINA, working on renewable energy connections and a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Manchester where he was involved in multiple network innovation competition projects (VISOR, EFCC, FITNESS) and the Horizon 2020 MIGRATE project. Dr Wall received his PhD from the University of Manchester for his work on inertia estimation and has co-authored 48 research papers.
